All Desert Epic Pt2 - NamibRand, Sesriem, Sossusvlei: All Alone in the Desert! (Namibia)
Overlanding Travel in the Namib Desert and the south of Namibia
In Part 2 of our All Desert Epic (#ADE), we have MORE car trouble. So, even more seriously NOT a "short and easy" overlanding trip. But the views sure are incredible. Nothing like the Namib Desert to help you appreciate the enormity of our world! Compared to giant rolling dunes and mountains, what's a bit of car trouble anyway?
Late to get going to our next destination in the NamibRand Private Reserve, we're certain to arrive after dark. The road there though puts all 4x4 trouble on the back burner for the duration of the drive. Spectacular! But we're faced with a very real problem when we realise the part we sourced is not exactly right for our old Land Cruiser. And that while we're very much in the middle of nowhere. As it arrived so late, and we had to get moving, and we had no time to get it installed, or to check whether it matched. Anyway, can't worry too much as next up, we're heading to a very special place for both of us - the first Namibian destination we visited during our first ever epic overlanding trip together: Sesriem, Deadvlei, and Sossusvlei.
One of the most otherworldly and incredible destinations we've ever encountered, and well worth a revisit. And this time, we got to stay longer and see much more. Some new things, some things still the same ... like a serious lack of ice in the very hot desert! Spectacular views from Dune 45, a stroll in the desert to visit the 900-year-old trees in Deadvlei. Even more of the area (like the Sesriem Canyon) in our next episode!
Let's continue on our travel through the south of Namibia.
Enjoy!

All Desert Epic Pt1-Kgalagadi & Namibia: Ghost Towns, Trouble, Wild Horses. Explosive Start to Trip
Переглядів 16 тис.2 місяці тому
Overlanding Travel in the Kgalagadi and the south of Namibia In Part 1 of our All Desert Epic (#ADE), we have car trouble before we even leave Johannesburg. And this should have given us a hint of what was in store for this "short and easy" overlanding trip. As we depart for the Kgalagadi National Park, adamant that we will head out as planned, we're facing leaking pipes and last minute work ov...

We're back from our epic December adventure, the All Desert Epic #ADE If you followed along on our journey on Polar Steps, you may already know the route. We started in the Kgalagadi, and travelled into Namibia, all the way to the Namib Desert, to see NamibRand, Sesriem, and the Namib Naukluft National Park, before making our way BACK to the Kalahari, via ... you guessed it, the Kgalagadi. Poss...
Big Botswana Baecation, Pt 7: Khama Rhino Sanctuary and the End (Travel Botswana Self Drive)

Overlanding Travel in Botswana - a self-drive adventure. We end our journey where we were meant to begin the trip - the stay we missed because of the passport drama - Khama Rhino Sanctuary. Botswana has been amazing, challenging, and eye opening. Now we also understand a bit better why so many people love to visit Botswana, and return there many times in their lifetimes. Our camping roadtrip dr...

Camping in Botswana Despite the heavy downpour, we manage to make it to the Baines' Baobabs, and our campsite near to them. This despite a few thoughts from staff at South Camp that they might not be reachable. We're in luck though, as the edge of the pans are entirely traversable, and we don't get stuck or bogged down. There are a few slippery spots, but staying in the tracks, our hard-learnt ...

Camping in Botswana As we enter the Nxai Pan National Park, on our way to South Camp, the first rains arrive properly. By the time we reach South Camp, it's pretty flooded all over. Luckily for us, we prebooked/requested a specific site (number 8) and it stands us in good stead, as it's one of the few sites not underwater. No shade but we don't mind too much in this case, as many other campers ...

Overlanding Travel in Botswana - a camping road trip. Well, if you plan on travelling in Botswana during the rainy season, it's only a matter of time before you get some sort of massive downpour. And literally as we drive into Nxai Pans National Park, the rain arrives properly. Once we finally get past an angry elephant bull, we arrive to an extremely flooded South Camp. Camping in Botswana Battery all sorted at Maun, we spend the next few days relaxing at Khumaga campsite in the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. This part of the park is entirely different to our previous salt pans experience, and quite surprising too. The campsite is great, and it's very fortunate that we have good shade, as it is exceptionally hot. The camp features well-kept ablutions, a fire...

Overlanding Travel in Botswana - a camping road trip. In Part 5 of our Big Botswana Baecation travel vlog, we depart from Moremi and head to Maun to get our battery sorted. From there, it's smooth sailing on to the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park on the Boteti River. Though, we make the gate with minutes to spare. As we set up camp at Khumaga, the light disappears. Camping in Botswana Deeper into Moremi now, we head to the well known and much-loved Third Bridge campsite, situated in the Okavango Delta. It's also one of the more private sites, with vegetation on both sides separati...

Camping in Botswana We head toward the Okavango Delta through Moremi Game Reserve, driving from the Savuti Marsh area in Chobe, and opt for a quick stay at South Gate Camp (though we actually enter via North Gate and Khwai). Camping in Botswana As we head inland from the Chobe River, toward the Savuti Marsh (a mere 160 kilometres away), we take it quite easy, thinking it will be a very short trip to our next campsite. Can Maun-Moremi via South Gate 7:18 be done as a day trip from Maun without rushing too much?

    • @TravelGigolo
      @TravelGigolo 7 днів тому

      If you're not in a hurry, it's about 2 hours from Maun to South Gate, and maybe another 3 hours to Third Bridge. It's only about 150 km or so, but it's a slow drive, especially once you're in the park. The mopani woodland is quite dense for most of the drive, and so you don't see much until you're close to Third Bridge. I wouldn't go from Maun to Third Bridge AND back in one day, it would largely be a day of just driving. Also you would miss the best viewing times, since you would be at Third Bridge in the middle of the day.

    I answered and said, "If I have found favor in thy sight, O Lord, show this also to thy servant: whether after death, as soon as every one of us yields up his soul, we shall be kept in rest until those times come when thou wilt renew the creation, or whether we shall be tormented at once?" 76 He answered me and said, "I will show you that also, but do not be associated with those who have shown scorn, nor number yourself among those who are tormented. 77 For you have a treasure of works laid up with the Most High; but it will not be shown to you until the last times. 78 Now, concerning death, the teaching is: When the decisive decree has gone forth from the Most High that a man shall die, as the spirit leaves the body to return again to him who gave it, first of all it adores the glory of the Most High. 79 And if it is one of those who have shown scorn and have not kept the way of the Most High, and who have despised his law, and who have hated those who fear the Most High -- 80 such spirits shall not enter into habitations, but shall immediately wander about in torments, ever grieving and sad, in seven ways. 81 The first way, because they have scorned the law of the Most High. 82 The second way, because they cannot now make a good repentance that they may live. 83 The third way, they shall see the reward laid up for those who have trusted the covenants of the Most High. 84 The fourth way, they shall consider the torment laid up for themselves in the last days. 85 The fifth way, they shall see how the habitations of the others are guarded by angels in profound quiet. 86 The sixth way, they shall see how some of them will pass over into torments. 87 The seventh way, which is worse than all the ways that have been mentioned, because they shall utterly waste away in confusion and be consumed with shame, and shall wither with fear at seeing the glory of the Most High before whom they sinned while they were alive, and before whom they are to be judged in the last times. 88 "Now this is the order of those who have kept the ways of the Most High, when they shall be separated from their mortal body. 89 During the time that they lived in it, they laboriously served the Most High, and withstood danger every hour, that they might keep the law of the Lawgiver perfectly. 90 Therefore this is the teaching concerning them: 91 First of all, they shall see with great joy the glory of him who receives them, for they shall have rest in seven orders. 92 The first order, because they have striven with great effort to overcome the evil thought which was formed with them, that it might not lead them astray from life into death. 93 The second order, because they see the perplexity in which the souls of the unrighteous wander, and the punishment that awaits them. 94 The third order, they see the witness which he who formed them bears concerning them, that while they were alive they kept the law which was given them in trust. 95 The fourth order, they understand the rest which they now enjoy, being gathered into their chambers and guarded by angels in profound quiet, and the glory which awaits them in the last days. 96 The fifth order, they rejoice that they have now escaped what is corruptible, and shall inherit what is to come; and besides they see the straits and toil from which they have been delivered, and the spacious liberty which they are to receive and enjoy in immortality. 97 The sixth order, when it is shown to them how their face is to shine like the sun, and how they are to be made like the light of the stars, being incorruptible from then on. 98 The seventh order, which is greater than all that have been mentioned, because they shall rejoice with boldness, and shall be confident without confusion, and shall be glad without fear, for they hasten to behold the face of him whom they served in life and from whom they are to receive their reward when glorified. 99 This is the order of the souls of the righteous, as henceforth is announced; and the aforesaid are the ways of torment which those who would not give heed shall suffer hereafter." 100 I answered and said, "Will time therefore be given to the souls, after they have been separated from the bodies, to see what you have described to me?" 101 He said to me, "They shall have freedom for seven days, so that during these seven days they may see the things of which you have been told, and afterwards they shall be gathered in their habitations." 102 I answered and said, "If I have found favor in thy sight, show further to me, thy servant, whether on the day of judgment the righteous will be able to intercede for the unrighteous or to entreat the Most High for them, 103 fathers for sons or sons for parents, brothers for brothers, relatives for their kinsmen, or friends for those who are most dear." 104 He answered me and said, "Since you have found favor in my sight, I will show you this also. The day of judgment is decisive and displays to all the seal of truth. Just as now a father does not send his son, or a son his father, or a master his servant, or a friend his dearest friend, to be ill or sleep or eat or be healed in his stead, 105 so no one shall ever pray for another on that day, neither shall any one lay a burden on another; for then every one shall bear his own righteousness and unrighteousness." .....2 Esdras 7:75 ///////////////

    Got me a Campmore Timbavati for 700 bucks second hand, used once. Me, im a solo camper, 1.8m tall iits more than adequate even though the height of the tent is 1.5. I prefer the D door, that zips across the bottom of the door, no slithery things can get in in my absence.... Or stingy / bitey / things for that matter. The fly is a different design and goes all the way to the ground all round. And has no front waning, which in my opinion is pretty useless as a provider of shade. So her is a tip..... 1.4 x verticle height.... thats the distance from yhe pole that will create a 45 deg with the ground plane. Now 45 deg is quite important, as it distributes the tension force of the guy rope equally between down force and stretch force... so make a chord guage... mark where the pole is when verticle tap a nail in there, run you chord ot at 45 deg, slam dunk uour peg in there attach guy hook onto pole pull slightly, same other side and tension.... See ! Im a solo camper. Know the tricks....😅 15:58

    • @TravelGigolo
      @TravelGigolo Місяць тому

      Sounds good, will give it a go. I'll measure the length of the ropes first. They may already be exactly 1.4x the pole height 🤔

    • @warren6899
      @warren6899 Місяць тому

      @@TravelGigolo HI ! Actually, the length of a guy should be 1.4 x verticle height + 600 - 700mm this will let you get hold of both the pole in one hand, and the slider in the other, then use your body strength to create proper tension. Cost cutting at the manufacturer. Once you peg at 45 deg the bloody slider's down at the peg, and you can't reach it, so you pull up on the slider, but this never leaves you with enough tension on the guy..... Not enough tension, high wind, canvas lifts, pole lifts, pole swings inwards at the bottom = catastrophe..... Pegging & guy ropes is not just as simple as one may believe.... I've made a study of it, and believe me you could do at least 3 video sessions.... The anatomy of a dog-leg <or> bent peg,, the reasons why it's made like it is, the mechanical differences between a straight & bent peg, pegging techniques, and guy ropes, and how to deploy them.....next time you up jhb / alberton side look me up, I'll be happy to give you all the Gen....... Great video Boet. I was always told if you change one coolant pipe best change all. Viscous coupling works with an oil(specific viscosity ) in it. You can change the oil in the coupling and fix the issue (check UA-cam). Heat in an engine sucks. Good luck safe travels.

    Any small problem out there like a loose fridge connection is enough to mess the trip when you are hours away from the nearest town with no supplies. An Engine problem, for me that would be game over.

    Interesting as always. If you stay in the parks accommodation is there a camp gate open/close time? What's to stop you wandering down to the falls under moonlight for example? I was thinking of staying outside the park, but I am now thinking of staying in the SANparks chalets. I only have one night and we are arriving there from Bloubergstrand! Long drive! The next day we need to be at Urikaruus.

    • @TravelGigolo
      @TravelGigolo 2 місяці тому

      Sometimes the lights are on at the falls and you can walk down there. I don't know how they decide which days those are. It's definitely one of the advantages of staying onsite that allows you to get sunrise and sunset views without having to stress about gate times.

    NICE VIDEO.. YES, PROBLEMS ARE NORMAL.. USE ORIGINAL TOYOTA CONSTANT TORQUE HOSE CLAMPS. AVOID THOSE SCREW TYPE HOSE CLAMPS (THEY EAT UP THE RADIATOR HOSE AND MAKE LEAKS LIKE WHAT YOU EXPERIENCED.). MY 100 SERIES BLEW THE TRANSMISSION (AUTO) WHEN I WAS ON A ROAD TRIP.. IT IS JUST A NOTHER DAY.. LIFE GOES ON...

    Are you topping up with anti freeze or with clean water? Water turns into steam which creates pressure. This puts pressure on your pipes and cooling system. It is important to always use anti freeze to mitigate.

    • @TravelGigolo
      @TravelGigolo 2 місяці тому

      We didn't carry antifreeze with us. We weren ot expecting to lose a lot water. The radiator coolant is replaced during servicing, we need to do very little topping up between services, so that's normally just plain water top up. I guess this is another lesson learned.

      More worrying is the state of the road from Beitbridge to Bulawayo. It has deteriorated a lot, some sections are potholed to the point of not being driveable. Beitbridge to Masvingo is great though. Coming back into SA via Beitbridge border is very quick. Zim is still an amazing country to explore though. All the best.
